E044: Daniel Patton
Blazing new trails: Daniel Patton creates more opportunities for all
FEATURED GUEST
Daniel Patton
Who would have guessed that the twelve year old on the TaeKwonDo exhibition team during the 1988 summer Olympics would one day be leading the equine industry forward through the development of innovative ranching events?
Daniel Patton’s determination and drive led to his success in martial arts at a young age and propelled him to success as an entrepreneur and industry leader. He aims to see what others in the equine industry need and fill that void with programs that will provide excitement and growth for decades to come.
Two new events made a lasting impression this year within the working western industry paying out over $140,000 in added monies. The Ranch Horse Triple Crown and the National Ranch Riding Futurity are helping open doors for industry growth and providing a gateway to welcome newcomers to the equine industry.
The Ranch Horse Triple Crown debuted at the APHA World Show where 147 exhibitors competed in ranch trail, ranch riding, and ranch rail in an effort to win the coveted triple crown. Following this event for horses over 4 years old, the inaugural National Ranch Riding Futurity launched at the Tulsa Reining Classic where 3-year-olds were cheered on by a hefty crowd of reiners.

Daniel’s goal with these ranching events is simple: break down barriers and build partnerships that encourage participation at all levels.
Here’s a sample of what you’ll see in the future from these ranching endeavors:
- Soon to be announced partnership with another equine association
- Youth triple crown with an an estimated $10K in scholarships plus prizes
- Stallion auction that creates a win-win-win for stallion owners, breeders, and competitors
- Non Pro addition to the National Ranch Riding Futurity

E043: Bud Lyon
Reining & Ranch Riding: Can you do both?
FEATURED GUEST
Bud Lyon
Bud Lyon began his life with horses in the California 4-H and Open show circuits. He followed the college path at CalPoly University and upon graduation went to work for Randy Paul to see if he could make a career out of training horses.
Now, multiple AQHA World Championships later, you might get him to admit that he makes a pretty decent horse trainer. In addition to his World Championships, Bud has earned spots in the Level 4 finals of all major NRHA events and won the Level 2 at the NRBC.
He and his wife, Kim, live in Whitesboro, TX, where he trains reining and ranch horses and teaches amateurs and Non Pros how to excel in either or both disciplines.
Bud shares his viewpoint on being successful in multiple disciples and how branching out can benefit you and your horse.
- Improve your horsemanship
- Develop better feel and timing
- Get comfortable with speed
- Let your horse decompress
- Keep your reiner from anticipating
- Increase showing longevity

He also addresses several common misconceptions.
- Teaching your reiner to trot will cause more breaks of gait in reining
- You have to take sliders off to do the ranch riding
- Ranch riding isn’t as challenging as reining
- Your horse can’t learn to do both because event styles differ too much
The fundamentals needed to perform well are the same: collection, softness, forward movement. “A well broke horse is a well broke horse.”

E042: NRCHA Executive Director, Anna Morrison
Anna Morrison: NRCHA Executive Director talks premier events, how to get involved, and the future of cow horse.
FEATURED GUEST
Anna Morrison
NRCHA Executive Director, Anna Morrison’s love for horses started as a young girl in Wisconsin. Growing up in an outdoor family but not a horse family meant working for the privilege of learning to ride. At the age of ten, she found her opportunity at a neighboring horse facility where she worked in exchange for lessons.
This led to Anna’s deep-rooted belief that everyone should be made to feel welcome in the horse industry. She shares this belief with NRCHA where shows, even premier events, exhibit more than horses. They are evidence of the core value of welcoming everyone from beginner to seasoned professional to join in the excitement.
Anna’s passion for the cow horse, NRCHA, and the equine industry is catching. Whether discussing the history of the sport, what the future holds, or the challenges of running premier events that are growing exponentially, her enthusiasm for reined cow horses and getting people involved is evident. Her goal: make sure everyone knows that NRCHA is a safe place for newcomers to learn and grow their horsemanship skills.
